My name is Taylor Nicholls and I am currently enrolled in the teaching program at Metro State. As children, some of us dream of becoming firemen, doctors, lawyers, or even construction workers. Many times throughout people’s lives their feelings change and the path they had initially wanted to undertake as a child begins to veer off in another direction. In my case I had always dreamed of becoming a teacher. A child’s imagination is so vast and often times, as young people, we find ourselves pretending to be what we aspire to become. In my case I have always dreamed of becoming a teacher.
There are many reasons individuals undertake certain career paths. Wealth, power, and glory are all characteristics people wish to attain when choosing careers. I believe as teachers we look to leave our mark through the minds of each and every child sitting in our classroom. Although we may not leave a legacy, or be known as a rich and powerful person, we help shape the younger generations so that they can carry on such tasks. The simple fact that I can help mold a person into an intelligent, kind, and caring person makes me know that there is no better job in the world.
This past spring break I traveled to Arizona with a group of friends. We ended up staying at my friend’s house whose mother is a second grade teacher. I found myself sitting with her for hours talking about the whole teaching experience. A certain instance in particular jumped out at me and made me realize why this job is so rewarding. She teaches in an underprivileged area in which school isn’t a priority to some of the children’s parents. She wakes up an hour earlier than she should have to every morning so that she can go to three of her student’s houses to pick them up for school. Their parents just simply don’t make them attend. The fact that these children’s lives could venture down a completely different path is amazing to think of, but as a teacher she can help shape them into successful individuals. Not only can we help shape them into better people, but help them utilize their surroundings to do so.
Technology is becoming such a huge part of our daily lives, that it must be implemented at an early age. By implementing technology into the teaching curriculum, we can allow students to utilize every asset offered to them to become the most successful individual they can become.
